Always double-check your facts

This might not actually be really fitting to our class, but i thought since it is about a newscast broadcasting invalid information it might even fit a little bit - plus, it's actually kind of funny.

Last week a Bolivian television station claimed to have two photographs of the inside of the missing Air France airliner when it crashed. The news presenter says that "these two photos were apparently taken by one of the passengers on the airliner the instant before the collision and after the aircraft crashed". Apparently, these pictures were recovered from a memory card of a digital camera that belonged to a passenger of said airliner. The photos came to the station via the internet.

Here's the video of the newscast:

What the television station didn't know was that these pictures were simply taken form the US TV show Lost. In the next video, you can see the exact pictures shown in the newscast at about 00:42 seconds.

While it definitely amused me that this mistake happened (especially since I love Lost), I at the same time was shocked that they broadcasted this. Nobody seems to have checked these pictures on their authenticity, or they did but didn't care nonetheless.

To be fair, the TV station apologized a day later, but I think that it just shouldn't have come to this.

You can rad the whole story here at the Telegraph.
