Proposition 8 - The Musical

What i want to talk about now already happened several months back when Barack Obama was elected.

Together with the Presidential Election, California had their citizens vote on Proposition 8. It was meant to restrict the definition of marriage to opposite-sex couples and eliminated same-sex couples' right to marry. It was passed, so that homosexuals from there on had no right to marry each other anymore.

After Prop 8 was passed, there were many protest in California in which also many celebrities took part.

The following video shows one of these 'protests', which was published on the website funnyordie.com, starring for example Jack Black, Neil Patrick Harris or Sarah Chalke. It's a musical meant to show people the discrepancies by voting 'Yes' on Prop 8 out of religious reasons, which were mostly brought up as reason for banning same-sex marriage. In the end, it also plays with the economical crisis.

It was shared by lots of people on many different platforms on the web like Twitter, Livejournal or even MySpace and so became very popular amongst these.

This is just one example of many where celebrities stand up for what they believe in, which rarely happens in Germany. It always is a huge part of every election that celebrities support their favourite candidate.

I like this example very much because it on the one hand is about something that i strongly believe in and on the other hand is a very funny way of trying to convince people of something.
